A repost of my article in this week’s Springville TimesThe Summer Bucket List: Celebrate National Ice Cream Month!

By Jennifer Weber

“I scream, you scream…” you know what comes next, we all scream for ICE CREAM! And since July just happens to be National Ice Cream Month, what better time to get outside and discover a new place to sample your favorite flavor. Or even better, visit one of your old favorite places in town and try out a NEW flavor.

My personal favorite ice cream spot in WNY and yes, I’m biased, but aren‘t we all when it comes to ice cream…is a short drive down Route 39 to Route 20 in Chautauqua County to a local restaurant called Sullivan’s Charbroil, located at 3590 East Main Road, Fredonia.

You never forget that one ice cream shop from your childhood, the one where you got to take your first bike ride on the road to get a large soft serve chocolate/vanilla twist cone with sprinkles, the one where you get your first “real” job as a teenager and learn to dislike making those same large twist cones with sprinkles knowing if you don’t get a solid base started on the cone, the ice cream will fall right into the big batch of sprinkles! And this might be why if you see me around town eating ice cream, it’s always in a bowl. Live and learn.

There’s no shortage of nostalgic local options around Springville including the recently opened Springville Dairy located at 84 East Main Street. In addition to so many tasty treats, they offer several gluten-free menu items to choose from. Gather around one of their many picnic tables and share some ice cream with your neighbors.

Less than a half mile up Main Street from the Springville Dairy in either direction you can also find frozen custard at Cozy Corner, at 690 East Main Street (on the corner of Route 240) and good old-fashioned hard ice cream at Kiril’s Restaurant, at 248 West Main Street.

If fro-yo is more your style, Springville has that covered too with Cindy Lou’s Frozen Yogurt located at 231 South Cascade Drive, Springville. Of course, while driving along Cascade, you can always stop at Burger King, McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts or Tim Horton’s for a sweet summer frozen treat.

Traveling a wee bit out of the Springville area, you can discover more custard at Addie’s, located at 12231 Route 16 in Yorkshire; the Lime Lake Snack Bar, happily serving up Perry’s Ice Cream located at 3197 Elton Road in Delevan and while stopping to pick up your garden goodies, make sure to get some ice cream at Jake’s Greenhouse & Country Store, located 11904 Route 240 East Concord.

Heading to the Southtowns requires a stop at Nick Charlap’s Ice Cream, located at 7264 Boston State Road, Hamburg ; 2 Scoops Ice Cream located at  4626 Camp Road, Hamburg or the Little Red Caboose in East Aurora at 79 Elm Street.

If you find yourself in the city of Buffalo, you simply must check out the new location of Lake Effect Artisan Ice Cream located at 1900 Hertel Avenue and the newest restaurant concept from Lloyd Taco Factory, which has nothing to do with tacos and everything to do with ice cream, Churn located at 1501 Hertel Avenue, Buffalo.

And last but not least, if you’re the giving back kind of ice cream connoisseur, you will want to check out the Yelp Ice Cream Adventure which takes place until the end of July. The following ice cream venues around WNY are offering their very own unique $5 Yelp Special with $1 of every purchase donated to Mercy Flight of WNY.
