Composting, me?

Yep friends. That’s a compost pile! Finally!

Growing up we always had a giant rubber Tupperware bin in the corner of the kitchen to throw our kitchen scraps into. Not because we would compost per se, but rather because living out in the country we would burn trash in the burn barrel and the food scraps weren’t burn material. Plus, you know leaving them in the garbage until had to “burn the papers” smelled bad. Not so environmentally friendly, eh?

At Gma/Gpa Baker’s house it was the same thing…I can recall getting yelled at by Gma Baker (and U Bill too!) HUNDREDS of times for emptying food scraps into the garbage instead of in the coffee tin on the counter. I admit almost every time I emptied into the garbage can anyhow. Lazy, lazy Jenny.

YEARS LATER. Surprise, surprise. A spiritual and earth-friendly awakening hit! Likely brought on by the fact that my wee niece and her mommy and daddy were quite diligent composters and if a 2-3-4 year old could properly throw items in the right place and save the earth, well, I could too. Hence, I’ve been wanting to start a compost pile for quite a long time now and just haven’t.

Lazy.

But this weekend? Out in my happy place in the country with He Who Makes Me Smile, something clicked. After making a GIANT bowl and 2/3rds of macaroni salad I took one of those giant coffee cans and filled it with pieces of veggies, coffee grounds, eggshells. And then we went out back and started the compost pile. Layers of twigs, brown matter, mulchy stuff and weeds from the rose gardens in the front of the house and a coffee bin full of goodies to start.

Too bad I didn’t start years ago! The soil in the backyard and field we have been planning to grow our garden needs lots and lots and lots of compost! Can you say CLAY? Oh well. Gotta start somewhere.

Do you compost? If so how long have you been doing it?
