Guess what, tis baseball season! Or so I was told this morning by my darling friend in DC who loves baseball.

I’ve never been a fan of baseball. Baseball PLAYERS in high school, yes. I enjoy going to live games yes. But I’ve only been at two professional games in my life, the Cubs vs. White Sox in HS and the Indians in a fancy Box in Cleveland. I’ve been promised another game or two, perhaps in DC or San Fran to break me in, we’ll see.

I do however love the ATMOSPHERE of a live baseball game. The hotdogs, the beer, the patriotic sing-a-longs, the old time traditions. Bring it. (With a tear in my eye during the national anthem of course.)

My sport of choice has always been football. Rough and tumble hard hitting, fast and loud. I grew up watching football, of course I know that both sides of my family were huge baseball fans as well and somehow that sport didn’t stick. I *think* it’s about attention span.

I’ve always said there are far, far too many baseball games and not enough football games. The season goes on and on and on and the playoffs go on and on and on. Same for hockey, however for some odd reason I don’t recall my family getting into hockey. I know Lil’ Brother is a fan now, but when we were young, not so much.

Funny how just a few short months can turn someone into a, partial, fan or something. I started accidentally watching hockey with my new BFF in town Richard. You know, he all loved hockey more than life and was all alone and brand new to our city, how could I not enjoy many beers at a bar when the game was on, right? (All about the beer…) Little did I know I was going to actually get involved. Ok, that’s not true. I can get involved and wrapped up in anything for a few hours when beer, Buffalo and a BFF is involved. But this sport called hockey…holy GOD it requires serious commitment. It’s almost like the perfect blend of the reason why I love football (the sport) and loathe baseball (the long season.)

Maybe it’s possible for me to enjoy a sport with a long season after all?

Who knew? (Well Val and Kevin insist they knew…)

So this thing called hockey. Despite the um, lackluster time of the season for me to be watching…turns out to be pretty fun. but my GOD I have no idea who has the strength and endurance to make it through the season. Hockey on Monday on Wednesday and Saturday and Sunday. Sometimes on Tuesday and Wednesday and Friday. So many games! SO MANY GAMES!

So many chances for heartbreak. I like my heartbreak served on a Sunday platter thank you much, with the occasional Monday night game or Thursday night thrown in for about 16 weeks (I am after all a BILLS fan, post-season? Not so much this decade.) Every day? For how many weeks? Eegads!

As long as the sport is fun to watch, the company is good and the beer tasty I guess I’m gonna consider myself a potential fan. Now to learn all those names and rules. Coach Cherry? Can you help?
