The History of Love by Nicole Krauss

My friend Rachel sent me an email months ago saying to RUN out and buy this book NOW because she loved, loved, loved it and I must read it.

And I have to say. I was about 3/4ths through the story, enjoying it yes, but not quite loveloveloving it…and I thought out loud “Gee, maybe the ending is really amazing.”

Of course, when I told this to Rachel she laughed and said that she pretty much loved the book from the beginning. You see, Rachel and I are pretty much Black/White when it comes to books we LOVE. Any recommendation I give to her usually gets a neutral response and vice versa. So I should have known. It happens all the time. Except for Jeanette Winterson. We both, so far, love her.

Anyhow. History of Love.

I enjoyed the story. I enjoyed the different stories coming together at the end. But, not a must read. At least for me. Quote at the end of the book I adored…

“Now that mine is almost over, I can say that the thing that stuck me most about life is the capacity for change. One day you’re a person and the next day they tell you you’re a dog. At first it’s hard to bear, but after a while you learn not to look at it as loss. There’s even a moment when it becomes exhilarating to realize just how little needs to stay the same for you to continue the effort they call, for lack of a better word, being human.”
