Mountain Arnica, Meadow Arnica, Alum, Hyssop, Calendulas and Moonwort.

Lil Brother recommended Arnica, it is used for for homeopathic remedies, and oil infusions, compresses on sprains, bruises and wounds. Since it is a perennial herb, I hope to find a nice spot for it somewhere on the edge of the woods for it to spread for years to come.

Gma Smith always kept Alum powder in the medicine cabinet, so when I came across this herb I knew I wanted to try to grow it for sentimental reasons. I remember using it whenever we would get canker sores. The powder from the root is used medicinally for treating cuts and scrapes or for making a healing mouthwash.

I chose to try to grow Hyssop this year mostly to explore making flower essences (since it apparently can help with feelings of guilt, which I seem to have a lot of…) Of course there are many medicinal uses also—good for cough suppressant mixed with Horehound and tis a cleanser for the lungs. I plan to plant this perennial with in the cottage garden area of the front side lawn.

I had limited success with Calendula in the herb garden last year but I didn’t plant nearly enough of this annual flower, so I bought four packages this year. I plan on using the pretty flower heads in salads and using it medicinally for salves along with Arnica since it acts as an antiseptic and healing agent and inhibits inflammation.

Moonwort is another flowering herb I plan on adding to the cottage garden area of the front side lawn, I’m excited to see the silver dollar seed pods grow…and I plan on using it medicinally as an antibacterial,  anti-inflammatory agent. But mostly, I picked this one cause it’s pretty.
