Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri

Perhaps there’s a reason I picked up this book at the exact time it would make me pause with wonder. Wonder how I can ever imagine being a writer when women as talented as this author exists. Wonder how I can feel so closely to characters in just a few short turns of the page.

The first time I picked up Jeanette Winterson, I fell in love. Same thing happened with Jane Austen. And dare I say, Jhumpa Lahiri has catapulted into this category of favorites. I cannot wait to pick up her other book: The Namesake.

In this collection of short stores, I found myself not wanting each story to end, but eagerly anticipating the next. A few of the stories were merely average, nothing striking. However, the others were outstanding. The first story “A Temporary Matter” by far was my favorite. Followed by the last story “The Third and Final Continent” and “This Blessed House.”

Go read her…you won’t be sorry.
