Join the Springville Calico Club!
Are you looking to meet more people and hang out socially once a month? Would you like to be in a club that makes a difference in our community? Well, then the Calico Club of Springville just might be your answer. And they are looking for new members to join their mission in 2018.
The Calico Club is a Springville service organization made up of area women who seek to be active in their community through social and service activities. The club holds their monthly meetings on the third Thursday of each month.
Each year the President schedules a calendar of events which include monthly programs such as learning about plants & herbs at the local nursery, getting a behind the scenes tour of the Heritage Building of the Concord Historical Society, heading to Buffalo for Lumagination at the Botanical Gardens or to see a theater production at Shea’s Performing Arts Center.
In addition to the social program, a business meeting is held and members decide on a service project for the following month.
“An excellent example would be one month we donated $50 dollars worth of calculators to the local Boys and Girls Club” said Rachel Carlson, current president of the Calico Club. “What this means is if you have an interest or need that is dear to you, bring that to the group and our service project of the month could be your design.”
Additionally, members of the club annually sponsor a $500 scholarship for one graduating senior from Springville-Griffith High School who plans on majoring in education, in honor of Judy Kessler a past member.
The Calico Club started in 1960, by a group of women who shared interests in crafts and service and came together to coordinate different projects to benefit the local community. Membership expanded outside of women who loved to craft through the years to include many teachers and other leaders in the community participating in events.
One of the most beloved fundraising projects led by the Calico Club over the years is the creation of the wooden replicas ‘buildings’ of Springville landmarks which include the Bertrand Chaffee Home, Gentner Auction Barn, Joylan Theater, Leland House, Pop Warner Museum, Presbyterian Church, Simon Brothers, Springville Center for the Arts and the Springville Depot.
The Springville Post Office is the latest collectible building offered by the club and is available for $20 each from any Calico Club member, Springville Homewear on East Main Street, the Lucy Bensley Library on North Buffalo Street or the Concord Mercantile on Franklin Street.
“Becoming a member of the Calico Club is really a great way to build new friendships as well as a sense of being a change-maker in our town and surrounding communities.” said Carlson. “We’d love to have new members join us!”
The first meeting of the Calico Club will be held on Thursday, February 15 at 7 pm. If you are interested in attending or learning more information about the club, contact Rachel Carlson at rcarlson14@hotmail.com.
