“Do you hear the people sing? Singing the song of angry men, it is the music of the people who will not be slaves again…”

It’s difficult to write about everyday life when America is burning.

I NEED to know what’s happening in the world and at the same time knowing about the up-to-the minute volatile news happening, I need to not be online and following for my own mental health. It’s a delicate balance. And one of privilege. And because of this privilege I feel guilty.

I’m tearing up just writing that sentence.

Sigh.

I spent a lot of time in bed Saturday morning, well into the afternoon. It was a late night on Friday. After getting up around 2 and grabbing coffee on the porch, HWMMS and I decided to tackle things on that always present to-do list of randomness. And away we went…

Starting with the porch. HWMMS hung the many, many lanterns and birdhouses and feeders. The lanterns became a new obsession last year and I was unsure at the time…this year, I actually enjoy the ridiculousness of the many hanging porch decorations. We spend a lot of time on the porch, it’s one of my favorite spots in Weber Wonderland. (I bought the red rocking chairs before we bought living room furniture!)

The one side of the porch is still bare because Mama Robin is still feeding her babies in the nest and apparently, she isn’t fond of hanging things.

The baskets are filled with lettuce and scarlet runner beans which will drape down the railings. And the planters—oh they are filled with many seeds and plants I will write about some other time.

While HWMMS was hanging things, I started to FINALLY pick up all the crap that’s been piling on the dining room table (Christmas Lights, Cat Boxes, Board Games…) I FINALLY opened up the last giant container of decorations labled “post-xmas” that  has a bunch of random things I needed to put back out. Turns out we found THREE more birdhouses inside! Oh, so many things to hang. I forgot I found them at the end of the season last year! So, away went the last of the last of the Christmas, Valentine, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter decorations.

I hung a few decorations in the kitchen (adorable rooster & chicken tin planters!) And found myself vacuuming the entire downstairs. I hit the living room carpet several times. We have a Rainbow vacuum cleaner and OH MY GOD the gunk that we end up dumping from the water tank horrifies me every time. Admittedly,  I have not used the giant beast of a vacuum in, in…months (I usually do before people come over…and well, no people over.) We do use our Roomba every day, but it is not the same as the deep clean. So yeah, that took, hours.

In the middle of putting things away, I of course, found myself randomly organizing other areas as well – we needed to put away the crockpot server and serving trays on the top shelf in the pantry so…of course that led to…

spices

Seeing all the bags of so many seeds and spices I bought from Nuts.com on the shelf. I ended up putting them all in mason jars, because I love how the jars look.

Which led to me cleaning the spice cupboard and realizing I still needed to chop and dry the turmeric that’s been sitting around.

The garage was cleaned out, many boxes were moved upstairs in the attic and we did a burn. (Still need to get in the freezers to organize, do the garden shelf and sweep the floor.) The giant container of garden gnomes are ready to be refurbished, starting with a good cleaning. The seeds started last weekend are now under the grow lights in the balcony because IT IS COLD OUTSIDE AGAIN AT NIGHT DAMMIT! (Ginger, turmeric, bitter melon, peanuts…they like it warm!)

HWMMS started mowing the lawn and….the belt busted which meant he went searching for a new belt in town and ended up empty handed.

Well, not totally empty handed. But, still, no belt.

And much gardening and baking bread was completed as well, but I’m going to write about that in a separate post.
