My friend Karen and I saw Jesus Christ Superstar – the 50th Anniversary production on stage at Shea’s Performing Arts Center this afternoon. Anyone who knows me well, knows that JCS is my favorite musical of all time. I even made room in my college thesis dedication to than JCS for helping me to get through.
I was blown away by the energy and talent of the ensemble cast. Seriously, the dancing? Just watching made me exhausted. And there was a lot of dancing. Dancing filled the stage, it was exhilarating.
Jenna Rubaii as Mary Magdalene blew me away. “Could We Start Again Please” is one of my favorites and oh my goodness, her angelic voice brought tears to my eyes. I lovedlovedloved her performance and dare say she is my most favorite. I will be watching out for her in the future. Her voice really touched me.
My 2nd favorite performer was Tommy Sherlock who played Pilate. I always tune out during the 39 lashes because , well, it’s pretty disturbing, but this time my eyes and ears were transfixed on him, shouting out each number. Powerful performance, gorgeous voice. Perfect fit for the roll.
Annus & Caiaphas were also both outstanding. And of course who doesn’t love Herod? I really wanted to hear more of these voices…so, so talented.
Other JCS Randomments:
- I loved the solo guitar staging of “Pilate’s Dream” and “Gethsemane.”
- Holy moly the songs moved quickly. I know every single word, so it was easy for me to follow along but at times the sound was muddled and lyrics difficult to hear, sometimes a bit behind or ahead of the band.
- I was definitely confused to why hipster Jesus kept carrying around his guitar. Pick up. Put down. Pick up again. It was odd. (BTW hipster man-bun Jesus worked for me, I liked the look.)
- The set design and staging was captivating. THAT said, Judas hanging didn’t work for me.
- I reallyreallyreallyreallyreally didn’t like seeing Jesus writhing/dying in front of the stage during “Superstar.”
- Glitter. Interesting touch, and it worked.
