Something happened on the way to a Lebanese Funeral in Olean, NY

Last week several co-workers and I traveled to Olean, NY to say goodbye to our co-worker George who passed away. (May he rest in peace and keep selling those subscriptions in heaven…)

The trip was somewhat long. 90 minutes each way from Buffalo. But the service was lovely. And it was important and the right thing to do to take the time out of our hectic schedules to pay our respects.

I’m so glad we went.

On the way back from the funeral, listening to an entire CD of  “When The Saints Go Marching In” (because that’s what George wanted his family to listen to on the way to the cemetery) Bobby, Maggie and I stopped at Earl’s in Chaffee, NY for lunch before heading back into the office.

Who can pass up Earl’s PIE!

We sat at the counter and ordered milkshakes and greasy food. We think George would have approved.

At some point during the car ride Ms. Maggie had commented on how it was such a lovely day and wouldn’t it be nice to take the rest of the afternoon off from work and run away to Ellicottville? “We could say we had car troubles!”

Stranded

Um…

We had car troubles. For real. We think George would have laughed at us. Good thing for AAA.

A wee bit later (up to 45 minutes as they say) a nice man from AAA jumped the battery for us. And there was much rejoicing.

Um…until we left the parking lot and realized about one minute into the trip that there was no acceleration and the battery wasn’t holding the charge (just like the nice mechanic from AAA told us.) Hello new alternator for Bobby. Back to Earl’s parking lot where Bobby called AAA once again and this time we waited for a tow.

At this point in time, finding a ride for all of us to get back to Buffalo would have taken a bit of time. Since there was a mechanic “about a mile up the road” we figured getting the car fixed in Chaffee made more sense than paying for a VERY LONG TOW back to Buffalo and finding a ride home for three.

It was a lovely day so we decided to walk a mile up the road to the mechanics. I mean what else did we have to do? Eat more pie? Welcome to Chaffee, NY!

Rumor had it that there was an establishment that served refreshing beverages, that were not milkshakes, to the properly aged person stranded in a small country town on the day before payday needing several hundred dollar car repairs after being kind enough to drive friends to a co-workers funeral in another county.

This rumour kept our hope alive. (And yes, we certainly think George would have liked it this way.)

Walking, walking…

Walking.

OH WAIT! WHAT IS THAT WE SEE!!!!

Thank you Mother Mary! Right next to the mechanic!

How long does it take to fix an alternator? Well…longer than it takes to color at the bar with Mr. Sketch Scented Markers.

And just a little longer to take this photo before leaving around 5pm.

Never a dull moment when time is spent with good friends. Many a POOR moment, but never dull.
