Read & Resist – May 30. I know it’s dated. Anyhow, the content remains important to share.
- The Emoluments Clauses, Explained – SHORT VERSION – EMOLUMENTS NOT ALLOWED – MAD KING DOESN’T GIVE A FLYING FUCK. “The Constitution doesn’t say how to enforce the Emoluments Clauses, but robust enforcement wasn’t needed in the past because presidents and other high-level officials voluntarily complied.”
- Preventing the Use of the National Guard to Evade the Posse Comitatus Act – “As described in a 2024 Brennan Center report, the Guard in its current form “resembles far more closely the kind of standing army that the framers feared than it does the local militias with which they were familiar.” As such, the Guard’s participation in law enforcement activities raises many of the same concerns that are triggered by participation by federal armed forces.”
- Donald Trump’s Decades-Long Obsession With Eugenics– “Trump makes a lot of outrageous statements—but there’s a pattern to his comments about intelligence (or lack thereof), his intense hostility towards disabled people (including reputed public use of the r-word stretching back decades), and his preoccupation with “good” genes: it’s inseparable from his constant promotion of Afrikaner and Northern European immigration, sympathy to claims of “white genocide,” and promotion of close advisors like Stephen Miller and Elon Musk.”
- He LIES! All the Time! So Say It! – “Trump “wasn’t accurate,” Trump “exaggerated,” Trump “misspoke,” Trump “mistakingly claimed,” Trump “falsely stated,” and on and on it goes. The media will offer a million different explanations for what Trump does every time he opens his mouth instead of calling it out for what it quite literally is: Trump is LYING.”
- “The Federal Government Is Gone”: Under Trump, the Fight Against Extremist Violence Is Left Up to the States – “The federal government used to prioritize domestic terrorism, and now it’s like domestic terrorism just went away overnight,” Nessel told the audience. “I don’t think that we’re going to get much in theway of cooperation anymore.”
- Trump’s Stunning Streak of Losses in Lower Courts – I say not really stunning considering 99% of what he’s doing is illegal.
- FDA Expanding Use of AI in Food Safety Inspection – I mean what can go wrong with this?
- US cancels more than $700 million funding for Moderna bird flu vaccine– Newsflash. BIRD FLU IS A THING AND WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE.
- GGGGGGGGGGG! “And maybe we need to treat more diabetes with cooking classes, not just throwing insulin at people.”
- RFK Jr. threatens to bar government scientists from publishing in leading medical journals – “The health secretary said the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association and The Lancet are in bed with pharma.”
- DOGE Asks US Supreme Court to Block Access to Its Records – Anytime there’s a PROTESTING OF SHARING PUBLIC INFORMATION – well…methinks fuckery is about.
- Revealed: UnitedHealth secretly paid nursing homes to reduce hospital transfers – “One term that UnitedHealth executives obsessed over was “admits per thousand” – APK for short. It was a measure of the rate that nursing homes sent their residents to the hospital. Under the “Premium Dividend” program, a low APK qualified a nursing home for the various bonus payments the insurer offered. A high APK meant that a nursing home received nothing.
- How Turning the Border into a Military Zone Evades Congress and Threatens Rights – “The apparent plan is to let the military act as a de facto border police force, with soldiers apprehending, searching, and detaining people who cross the border unlawfully. This move could have alarming implications for democratic freedoms. Moreover, it continues a pattern of the president stretching his emergency powers past their limits to usurp the role of Congress and bypass legal rights.”
- Trump’s Vision for Policing Comes into Focus– “Unleashing” things is a theme in Trump’s executive orders—at least six executive orders (EOs) to date have included a form of that word in their titles. But “unleashing” is particularly stark in the policing context, suggesting a desire for policing unconstrained by law or democratic norms.
- How the Trump Administration Is Weakening the Enforcement of Fair Housing Laws– “It’ll give free rein to companies, to states, to governments to take advantage of people, to refuse to respect their rights, without fear of response from the government. They know that no one is watching, no one will hold them accountable, so they can just do what they want.”
