Read & Resist – May 9. I know it’s dated. (How odd to suggest, just a few days makes something *dated* – I remember the world BEFORE BREAKING NEWS!) Anyhow, the content remains important to share.

  • IS THIS A COUP – ugh, this website. I’d rather be tracking the air quality
  • Suspending Habeas Corpus– “But then Stephen Miller went on television Friday afternoon and made some of the most remarkable (and remarkably scary) comments about federal courts that I think we’ve ever heard from a senior White House official.
  • White House ‘actively looking’ at suspending habeas corpus in immigration crackdown-The only invasion I see involves MAGA invading America. “Well, the Constitution is clear — and that of course is the supreme law of the land — that the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus can be suspended in a time of invasion,” Miller told reporters at the White House.”
  • Maga says Pope Leo may be American, but he’s not ‘America first’ – Bannon, who had suggested Leo as a dark horse for the papacy, predicted tensions between the White House and Vatican – and said they could even tear apart American Catholics. “So if this Pope – which he will do – tries to come between President Trump and his implementation of the mass deportation programme, I would stand by.”
  • Does a Fetus Have Constitutional Rights? – Grrrrrr – Pro-life oh except for the life of the fetus vessel.
  • NASA, in surprise shift, may launch rockets to Mars next year – “SpaceX’s Starship is not the only contender for the trip. Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket, which launched for the first time in January, could carry a small payload to Mars. The company is already contracted to send two small satellites to Mars this year or next to study the planet. Rocket producer ULA has also built rockets for Mars missions.”
  • USDA, DOGE demand states hand over personal data about food stamp recipients– “The Department of Agriculture is demanding states hand over personal data of food assistance recipients — including Social Security numbers, addresses and, in at least one state, citizenship status, according to emails shared with NPR by an official who was not allowed to speak publicly.”
  • Trump shut out refugees but is making White South Africans an exception– “Last year, no South Africans of any race, ethnicity or linguistic group were vetted by the United Nations as meeting its criteria to be resettled as refugees, according to the organization’s data. State Department officials would not say why the 60 Afrikaners set to arrive Monday were granted refugee status, but a department memo obtained by The Post said that most of them “have witnessed or experienced extreme violence with a racial nexus,” including home invasions, murders or carjackings that took place up to 25 years ago.”
  • FDA picks critic of COVID boosters to be new top vaccines official– “Prasad’s following grew during the COVID-19 pandemic, as he criticized measures like vaccine mandates and called for Moderna’s vaccine to be banned in men under 40. During the pandemic, he was accused alongside Makary and Dr. Tracy Høeg of being a prominent purveyor of misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines.”
  • 100 Dizzying Days for FEMA– “The acting FEMA Administrator, Cameron Hamilton, was unexpectedly fired. The news came one day fter Hamilton testified to Congress that dismantling FEMA was ‘not in the best interest of the American people.’
  • E.P.A. Plans to Shut Down the Energy Star Program –“President Trump has railed against energy efficient appliances and taken particular aim at shower heads and toilets that are designed to conserve water.”
  • Trump admin ends extreme weather database that has tracked cost of disasters since 1980– “The disasters database, which will be archived but no longer updated beyond 2024, has allowed taxpayers, media and researchers to track the cost of natural disasters — spanning extreme events from hurricanes to hailstorms — since 1980. Its discontinuation is another Trump-administration blow to the public’s view into how fossil fuel pollution is changing the world around them and making extreme weather more costly. “
  • Internal VA Emails Reveal How Trump Cuts Jeopardize Veterans’ Care, Including To “Life-Saving Cancer Trials” – Despite a congressional mandate to expand care for veterans, internal Veterans Affairs messages paint a stark portrait of how chaotic cost cutting has already imperiled tests of treatments for cancer, opioid addiction and more
