The Four Agreements
“The only reason you suffer is because you choose to suffer. If you look at your life you will find many excuses to suffer, but a good reason to suffer you will not find. The same is true for happiness. The only reason you are happy is because you choose to be happy. Happiness is a choice and so is suffering.”
A simple quick read. I can sum it up for you below. Just read the bold titles. Those are The Four Agreements. Work everyday to make these into a daily practice in your life and la la la…everything will be better.
I need a lot of help with #2 and #3 personally.
1st Agreement: Be Impeccable with Your Word
“A sin is anything that you do which goes against yourself . Everything you feel or believe or say that goes against yourself is a sin. You go against yourself when you judge or blame yourself for anything. Being without sin is exactly the opposite. Being impeccable is not going against yourself. When you are impeccable, you take responsibility for your actions, but you do not judge or blame yourself.
2nd Agreement: Don’t Take Anything Personally
“Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves. All people live in their own dream, in their own mind, they are in a completely different world from the one we live in. When we take something personally, we make the assumption that they know what is in our world, and we try to impose our world on their world. Even when a situation seems so persona, even if others insult you directly, it has nothing to do with you.”
3rd Agreement: Don’t Make Assumptions
“In any kind of relationship we can make the assumption that others know what we think, and don’t have to say what we mean. They are going to do what we want because they know us so well. If they don’t do what we want, what we assume they should do, we feel hurt and think, “How could you do that? You should know.” Again, we make the assumption and then put more assumptions on top of it.”
The 4th Agreement: Always Do Your Best
“Do not be concerned about the future, keep our attention on today, and stay in the present moment. Just live one day at a time. Always do your best to keep these agreements, and soon it will be easy for you.
